How Companies Can Access Specialist Expertise Without Hiring a Large Consulting Team

4 min read

For a lot of companies, the default response to a hard problem is the same: bring in a consulting firm. It's a familiar process, and for large, multi-faceted problems, it's often the right one. But plenty of real business problems are more contained than that — and the traditional model wasn't built with a smaller, more focused problem in mind.

The gap between "no help" and "a full engagement"

Between hiring nobody and hiring a full consulting team, there's a real middle ground: a direct conversation with someone who has specific, relevant experience. That's often exactly the right size for a well-defined problem — evaluating a pricing decision, sanity-checking a go-to-market plan, understanding how someone else structured a similar function.

What to look for instead

Rather than starting from "which firm should we hire," it's worth starting from "who has actually solved something like this before." That reframing usually points to a specific kind of person — someone who has done the exact job, not someone who has advised on it from the outside.

Keeping the engagement appropriately sized

A smaller, more direct engagement — one relevant person, a focused conversation, a clear question — is often faster to start and easier to evaluate than a multi-week proposal process. It won't fit every problem, but for a lot of the problems companies actually face day to day, it's enough.
